The most important part of design and fitting for western saddles is the rigging component. It is essential for proper weight distribution and balance of the rider on the horse. There is 3/4, double and three way rigging fits. These are mostly used for riders involved with barrel racing, western equitation and team roping.

Some Tips When Fitting a Western Saddle:

So one thing you want to do when riding on a western saddle for the first time is make sure your stirrups are the proper length. You want your stirrups a little longer than you would with an English saddle. Basically, you'll want the length of the stirrup a little longer than the length of your arm. Lengthen the stirrup by adjusting the buckle under the fender either up or down. Make sure each stirrup is adjusted evenly so that you won't feel off balance when on the horse. You may need to actually get up on the horse to feel if they are even, because eye-balling it is sometimes difficult.
